The boy suffered a graze wound to the head after the self-inflicted shooting on Tuesday, Aug. 29.
Chante Odom was charged on Wednesday, Aug. 30, with endangering the welfare of a child and weapons offenses. She did not have a permit to carry a weapon in New Jersey or Pennsylvania, police said. Odom was described by police as a friend of the boy's family.
The shooting occurred Tuesday at 10:45 a.m. on the 156 block of Phillips Avenue in Trenton. The boy retrieved the gun from Odom's belongings, police said.
The child was rushed to a nearby hospital. He was then taken to Cooper Hospital Pediatric Unit ICU where he was in stable condition.
At the time of the shooting, two other children and a male adult were at the home, police said.
No other injuries were reported.
